Punta Espinosa is located on Fernandina Island in Ecuador’s Galápagos archipelago, an island shaped by recent volcanic activity and isolated landscapes. The site is known for its dark lava fields, sparse vegetation, and large populations of marine iguanas resting along the shoreline. Because Fernandina has no permanent human settlement, Punta Espinosa remains one of the least disturbed visitor sites in the islands. Wildlife moves freely across the rocky terrain, and the area is closely monitored as part of the Galápagos National Park, which limits visitor access and protects sensitive habitats.

The environment around Punta Espinosa reflects the strong volcanic character of Fernandina Island. Lava flows, mangrove patches, and tide pools create a landscape that supports species adapted to harsh coastal conditions. Flightless cormorants nest near the shore, while Galápagos hawks can often be seen searching for prey above the lava ridges. Sea lions gather along beaches and docks, and penguins occasionally appear in nearby waters cooled by ocean currents. The contrast between black volcanic rock, turquoise water, and colonies of wildlife gives the area a distinct appearance compared to greener islands in the archipelago.

Punta Espinosa is especially recognized for having one of the largest concentrations of marine iguanas in the Galápagos. During cooler mornings, hundreds of iguanas gather tightly together on warm rocks before moving toward the sea to feed on algae. Visitors walking the marked trails often encounter nesting cormorants, Sally Lightfoot crabs, and lava lizards within short distances of one another. The site also contains remains of older lava formations that show how volcanic eruptions continue to shape Fernandina Island. Rangers and guides emphasize low-impact tourism practices to reduce stress on the wildlife and fragile terrain.
