Daphne Major is a small volcanic island in the Galápagos archipelago of Ecuador, located northwest of Santa Cruz Island. It rises steeply from the ocean, forming a crater-like shape with cliffs surrounding much of its coastline. The island is uninhabited and not open to general tourism, which has allowed it to remain an important natural site for scientific study. Its isolation and limited human presence make it a controlled environment where ecological processes can be observed with minimal disturbance.

The island holds a unique place in scientific research, particularly in the study of evolution. It became widely known through long-term fieldwork on Darwin’s finches, where researchers have observed changes in beak size and behavior across generations. These observations have contributed to a deeper understanding of natural selection in real time. While Daphne Major does not have a resident culture, its role in shaping modern biological knowledge gives it a distinct intellectual significance within the Galápagos region.

Daphne Major’s landscape is defined by rocky slopes, sparse vegetation, and a central crater formed by past volcanic activity. The terrain supports limited plant life, including hardy shrubs and grasses adapted to dry conditions. Birdlife is the island’s most notable feature, with several species of finches, as well as seabirds such as boobies and frigatebirds, using the cliffs and interior for nesting. The surrounding waters are part of a protected marine reserve, contributing to the area’s ecological importance.

There are no permanent facilities or food traditions on Daphne Major due to its protected status and lack of settlement. However, its scientific legacy has made it one of the most studied locations in the Galápagos. Access is typically restricted to researchers with special permits, ensuring that the island’s fragile ecosystems remain intact. Its importance lies not in visitor experiences but in the knowledge gained from careful observation, making it a key reference point in the study of evolution and island ecology.
