Newark, New Jersey is often overshadowed by its proximity to New York City but still has a strong identity rooted in history, art, and global culture. As one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded in 1666, Newark’s rich past is visible in landmarks like the Old First Presbyterian Church and Military Park, where George Washington once camped. The city’s architecture reflects its legacy, from the Beaux-Arts Newark Museum building to the art deco facade of the historic Hahne & Co. department store, now repurposed with shops and housing.

Newark has long been a cultural hub, anchored by the renowned Newark Museum of Art, which houses one of the country’s most impressive collections of Tibetan art, along with American paintings, decorative arts, and a planetarium. Just across the street, the Newark Public Library’s grand main branch hosts exhibitions and local history archives. The performing arts shine at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), one of the largest in the country, offering jazz, ballet, theater, and concerts throughout the year. NJPAC also plays a key role in the city's vibrant calendar of cultural festivals, including the annual Lincoln Park Music Festival and Portugal Day.
