Pattaya is a coastal city in Chon Buri Province on Thailand's eastern Gulf coast, within easy reach of Bangkok. It developed from a small fishing community into a major seaside urban center, and today its landscape includes beaches, a busy waterfront, hotels, shopping areas, residential neighborhoods, and entertainment districts. Pattaya Beach forms the central shoreline, while Jomtien Beach extends south of the city and provides a more spacious coastal setting. Offshore, Ko Lan is accessible by ferry and offers additional beaches and clear coastal waters. The city combines a dense urban environment with easy access to the Gulf.

Pattaya's cultural landscape includes Buddhist temples, Chinese shrines, local markets, and traditions connected with fishing communities. Wat Phra Yai, located on Pratumnak Hill, is known for its large seated Buddha statue and views over the surrounding coast. The Sanctuary of Truth is another distinctive landmark, constructed from intricately carved wood and decorated with religious and philosophical imagery from Thai and other Asian traditions. Pattaya also hosts the annual Songkran celebrations and other community events. These traditions exist alongside the city's modern tourism industry, creating a cultural landscape that is both local and internationally oriented.

The city's coastline provides opportunities for swimming, boating, and other water-based activities, while Ko Lan is a popular destination for day trips from Pattaya's harbor. Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, located southeast of the city, contains landscaped gardens, botanical collections, cultural performances, and traditional Thai architecture. Khao Phra Tamnak offers elevated views across Pattaya Bay, while nearby Bang Saray and the surrounding countryside provide a quieter contrast to the central urban area. Pattaya's position between the Gulf and the hills of eastern Thailand also makes it a convenient base for exploring the wider Chon Buri region.

Pattaya's food scene reflects its coastal location and large, diverse population. Seafood restaurants serve locally sourced fish, prawns, squid, crab, and shellfish, while markets offer Thai dishes such as som tam, grilled seafood, noodle soups, and curries. The city also has a wide selection of regional Thai cuisines and international restaurants. Fresh fruit, coconut-based desserts, and street snacks are common throughout the city. Pattaya's combination of Gulf coast scenery, urban entertainment districts, Buddhist landmarks, seafood markets, and access to nearby islands gives it a distinct role among Thailand's major coastal destinations.
