Tofo Beach is a coastal village and beach destination in Inhambane Province, southern Mozambique, overlooking the Indian Ocean. The settlement is known for its broad sandy beach, warm water, coastal dunes, and strong connection to marine activities. Tofo has a relaxed village setting with restaurants, guesthouses, small shops, and local markets close to the shore. Its location near Inhambane city makes it one of the province’s best-known coastal destinations. The beach is particularly associated with surfing, diving, snorkeling, fishing, and boat excursions into the surrounding Indian Ocean.

Tofo is part of a coastal region with strong Tsonga cultural traditions, where fishing, agriculture, music, crafts, and family networks remain important to local identity. Fishing has long been closely connected to daily life, and traditional boats can still be seen along the shoreline. The wider Inhambane region is also known for timbila, a traditional Mozambican musical form associated especially with the Chopi people. Tofo’s modern tourism economy has grown alongside these established traditions, creating a setting where local fishing practices and community life exist alongside dive centers, surf schools, and small coastal businesses.

The waters around Tofo are particularly noted for marine wildlife. Whale sharks are regularly encountered in the wider coastal waters, while manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine species can also be seen. Diving sites such as Manta Reef provide access to offshore marine habitats, while snorkeling and boat trips offer additional ways to explore the ocean. The long beach itself is suitable for walking and surfing, with coastal dunes and low vegetation extending inland. Nearby Tofinho Beach provides another stretch of coastline, known for its rocky shoreline and surf conditions.

Seafood is central to Tofo’s food culture, with prawns, crab, calamari, and freshly caught fish commonly appearing on local menus. Mozambican cooking also makes extensive use of coconut, cassava, maize, and chili, while peri-peri sauces are widely associated with the country’s coastal cuisine. Tofo is especially notable for its relationship with whale sharks, which feed in the plankton-rich waters along the Inhambane coast. The area is also recognized for manta rays and other large marine animals. This combination of a working coastal village, a broad beach, and productive offshore waters gives Tofo a distinctive place within Mozambique’s southern coastline.
