Tobermory is a small harbour community at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, where Georgian Bay meets Lake Huron. Its location is surrounded by clear freshwater, rugged limestone shoreline, forests, and numerous offshore islands. Tobermory is closely associated with Fathom Five National Marine Park and Bruce Peninsula National Park, which protect distinctive terrestrial and underwater environments around the peninsula. The community's harbour remains active with sightseeing boats, ferries, fishing vessels, and recreational craft, while the surrounding landscape provides a base for exploring one of Ontario's most geologically distinctive coastal areas.

The Bruce Peninsula lies within the traditional territories of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, whose communities have longstanding connections to the land and waters of the region. Tobermory's later development was influenced by fishing, shipping, quarrying, and tourism, with its sheltered harbour becoming an important point for movement through Georgian Bay. The Bruce Trail also passes through the area as part of its route along the Niagara Escarpment. Local heritage sites and museums interpret the peninsula's Indigenous, maritime, and settlement history, while traditional knowledge continues to inform understanding of the region's plants, wildlife, waterways, and changing seasons.

Bruce Peninsula National Park contains limestone cliffs, forests, wetlands, beaches, and the famous Grotto, a sea cave overlooking Georgian Bay. Fathom Five National Marine Park protects waters around Tobermory and contains shipwrecks, lighthouses, islands, and unusual underwater rock formations. Flowerpot Island is known for its tall limestone sea stacks, while the nearby Chi Sin Tib Dek Road and trails provide access to coastal and forest habitats. Clear water allows visitors to see portions of historic shipwrecks from glass-bottom boats, and the surrounding waters support lake trout, whitefish, smallmouth bass, and other freshwater species.

Tobermory's food traditions are closely connected to the waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, with local restaurants serving freshwater fish alongside Ontario produce, baked goods, and other regional ingredients. Whitefish and trout are particularly associated with the local fishery. The community's marine setting also supports a distinctive tradition of boat-based exploration, with glass-bottom tours providing views of underwater shipwrecks and geological features. One of the area's most notable natural details is the concentration of freshwater shipwrecks around Fathom Five National Marine Park, where clear water, limestone reefs, and changing weather conditions have shaped a complex underwater landscape.
