Athabasca Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in the Canadian Rockies, located in Jasper National Park along the Columbia Icefield Parkway in Alberta. It forms part of the Columbia Icefield, a vast area of ice and snow that feeds several major river systems. The glacier extends down from the icefield between rugged mountain peaks, with its lower section visible from a marked viewpoint and trail. Its location makes it an important feature of the Icefields Parkway, while the surrounding landscape includes rock, alpine vegetation, glacial valleys, and snow-covered peaks.

Athabasca Glacier lies within the traditional territories of several Indigenous peoples, including the Stoney Nakoda, Mountain Cree, and Métis communities. Indigenous connections to the Canadian Rockies include travel, hunting, gathering, and knowledge of mountain landscapes and waterways. The Columbia Icefield also has a long history of exploration and mountaineering, with the Icefields Parkway providing access to remote alpine terrain. Today, Parks Canada manages the surrounding national park landscape, while visitors encounter the glacier through designated trails, interpretive programs, and viewpoints designed to protect the fragile environment.

The glacier is part of the Columbia Icefield, which covers a high plateau between the peaks of the Canadian Rockies. Meltwater from the icefield contributes to rivers that eventually flow toward the Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic watersheds, making the region an important continental drainage divide. The Glacier Viewpoint provides a close view of the glacier's terminus, while the Toe of the Glacier trail leads toward the ice. The nearby Columbia Icefield Skywalk extends along a cliff above the Sunwapta Valley, offering views of the surrounding mountains and glacial landscape. Wildlife in the broader area includes mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, and bears.

The glacier environment has little agriculture or permanent settlement, so food traditions are associated mainly with nearby mountain communities and visitor facilities rather than the icefield itself. Restaurants and lodges along the Icefields Parkway commonly serve Canadian and regional dishes, while local ingredients may include game meats, berries, and maple products. A notable feature of Athabasca Glacier is the series of marked signs showing where its edge has stood at different points, providing a visible indication of long-term ice retreat. The glacier is therefore not only a scenic landmark but also a useful place for observing changes in alpine environments and glacial conditions.
