Boa Vista is an island in Cape Verde known for its broad sandy landscapes, volcanic terrain, and long Atlantic coastline. It is the easternmost of the Barlavento islands and has a relatively dry climate, with much of its interior covered by open plains, dunes, and rocky ground. Sal Rei, the island’s main town, sits beside a sheltered bay and serves as its principal commercial centre. Fishing remains part of local life, while tourism has become an important part of the island’s economy, particularly along the southern and western coasts.

Boa Vista has a strong connection to Cape Verdean music, fishing, and island traditions. Sal Rei contains historic buildings associated with the island’s former salt and trade industries, while the ruins of Fort Duque de Bragança stand on an islet just offshore. Local culture reflects the wider Cape Verdean blend of African and European influences, expressed through music, food, festivals, and everyday community life. The island is also known for its association with morna, a Cape Verdean musical tradition closely connected with themes of migration, longing, and island life.

The island’s natural attractions include the Viana Desert, where wind-blown sand forms a small desert landscape inland from Sal Rei, and the long beaches of Santa Monica and Chaves. Boa Vista is an important nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles, particularly along protected stretches of coastline. The waters around the island also support humpback whales, dolphins, and a variety of seabirds. Near the northern coast, the shipwreck of the Cabo Santa Maria has become a recognizable landmark, with its remains visible from the shore amid the island’s dry coastal landscape.

Boa Vista’s cuisine reflects its Atlantic setting and Cape Verdean culinary traditions. Fresh fish, seafood, beans, corn, and locally grown vegetables are common ingredients, while cachupa remains one of the country’s best-known traditional dishes. The island is also associated with goat cheese and locally produced grogue, a sugarcane spirit made in Cape Verde. A distinctive feature of Boa Vista is the contrast between its extremely dry interior and the rich marine environment surrounding it. Its dunes, beaches, turtle nesting grounds, fishing communities, and Atlantic waters give the island a character shaped strongly by land and sea.
