Brittany is a region in northwestern France defined by a long Atlantic coastline, historic towns, fishing ports, farmland, and a strong regional identity. Its landscape ranges from sandy beaches and rocky headlands to tidal estuaries, islands, and inland forests. Cities such as Rennes, Saint-Malo, and Vannes provide different perspectives on Breton life, while smaller places such as Dinan, Locronan, and Rochefort-en-Terre preserve traditional architecture. Brittany is also known for its distinctive Breton language, which remains part of the region's cultural heritage alongside French.

Brittany's culture reflects its Celtic heritage, maritime traditions, and long-standing regional customs. Breton music and dance remain important through festivals and local gatherings, while traditional costumes and embroidery are still displayed during cultural events. The region contains numerous megalithic sites, including the remarkable alignments at Carnac, as well as medieval castles, churches, and fortified towns. Saint-Malo's granite walls reflect its maritime history, while towns such as Vannes preserve medieval streets and timber-framed houses. Breton legends and stories are also closely associated with forests, coastal landscapes, and the Arthurian traditions of Brocéliande.

The Breton coastline provides some of the region's most varied scenery. The Pink Granite Coast is known for its unusually coloured granite formations, while the Crozon Peninsula combines cliffs, beaches, and sheltered coves. The Gulf of Morbihan contains numerous islands and tidal channels, and the Île de Bréhat is known for its gardens and coastal paths. Inland, the Forest of Brocéliande offers wooded trails and sites connected with Arthurian legend. Major landmarks include Mont Saint-Michel de Brasparts in the Monts d'Arrée, the walled town of Concarneau, and the medieval port of Dinan.

Food is central to Breton identity, with crêpes and galettes among the region's best-known specialities. Galettes are traditionally made with buckwheat flour and served with savoury fillings, while sweet crêpes are often paired with butter, sugar, fruit, or caramel. Kouign-amann, a layered pastry made with dough, butter, and sugar, originated in Douarnenez. Seafood is widely available along the coast, including oysters from Cancale and mussels from coastal farms. Brittany is also known for salted butter, cider, and buckwheat, while local markets provide a direct link between coastal fisheries, farms, and everyday regional cooking.
