L'Anse aux Meadows is a coastal settlement and archaeological site at the northern tip of Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. The surrounding landscape consists of low coastal terrain, peat bogs, rocky shorelines, and exposed areas overlooking the Strait of Belle Isle. The area is best known for its Norse archaeological remains, which provide the earliest confirmed evidence of European presence in North America. The site is part of a protected cultural landscape that includes both land and marine areas. Its remote setting also places it within a landscape shaped by strong winds, cool maritime conditions, and northern coastal vegetation.

L'Anse aux Meadows is closely associated with Norse exploration and settlement in North America. Archaeological investigations uncovered the remains of timber-framed turf buildings, including dwellings, workshops, and a forge. Evidence of iron working and boat repair indicates that the settlement served as a base for exploration and practical maritime activities. Parks Canada presents this history through reconstructed buildings, archaeological exhibits, and living-history programs with interpreters. The site is also significant for its connection to the Indigenous peoples who occupied and used the wider region, representing an important meeting point between different histories of travel and settlement.

The L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site contains reconstructed Norse buildings, archaeological remains, walking trails, and a visitor centre overlooking the coastal landscape. The Meeting of Two Worlds sculpture commemorates the encounters between Indigenous peoples and Norse explorers, while the surrounding trails lead through bogs and coastal terrain. The nearby shoreline provides views across the Strait of Belle Isle toward Labrador, and the region is known for seabirds, marine mammals, and seasonal icebergs. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and is recognized for the archaeological evidence of the earliest known European settlement in North America.

Food in L'Anse aux Meadows reflects the wider culinary traditions of northern Newfoundland, where cod, salmon, mussels, berries, root vegetables, and locally harvested ingredients have long been important. Nearby communities provide restaurants and small food businesses serving seafood and traditional Newfoundland dishes. A distinctive feature of the archaeological site is evidence of bog iron processing, showing that the Norse settlers produced iron locally rather than bringing all of their metal supplies with them. Reconstructed longhouses and workshops allow visitors to see how timber, turf, and other available materials were used to create a working settlement on the northern edge of the Atlantic.
