Ivalo is a small settlement in Finnish Lapland, located along the Ivalo River in the municipality of Inari, well north of the Arctic Circle. It serves as the administrative and commercial center of the municipality and provides services for the surrounding wilderness communities. The river runs through the settlement before continuing toward Lake Inari, while extensive forests and open fell country surround the valley. Ivalo is also home to Finland’s northernmost airport, giving it an important role in access to northern Lapland. Despite its regional services, the settlement remains closely connected to its rural surroundings.

Ivalo’s identity is shaped by the cultures and livelihoods of northern Lapland. The wider Inari municipality is home to Finnish, Inari Sámi, Skolt Sámi, and Northern Sámi communities, with reindeer herding, fishing, forestry, and other local services remaining important. Nearby Inari village is regarded as a center of Sámi culture and is home to Siida, the Sámi Museum and Nature Centre, which presents Sámi heritage alongside the ecology of northern Lapland. Ivalo itself has developed as a transport and service center, while traditional livelihoods remain visible in the surrounding forests, rivers, and grazing areas.

The Ivalo River is central to the landscape, providing opportunities for fishing, boating, and riverside recreation before reaching the larger waters of Lake Inari. The extensive wilderness around Ivalo includes forests, wetlands, and fells, with nearby protected areas such as Urho Kekkonen National Park and Lemmenjoki National Park. Saariselkä, a major fell and outdoor destination, lies south of Ivalo, while Inari and Lake Inari are reached to the north. Seasonal changes strongly influence the landscape, from the long daylight of the summer midnight sun to autumn foliage and the snowy conditions of the polar winter.

Food in Ivalo reflects northern Finnish and Sámi traditions, with reindeer, fish, berries, mushrooms, potatoes, and rye among the ingredients associated with the region. The nearby rivers and lakes provide species such as whitefish and trout, while wild berries and mushrooms are gathered from the surrounding forests. Reindeer herding remains an important part of northern Lapland's culture and economy, and reindeer meat appears in many regional dishes. A distinctive feature of Ivalo is its role as a practical meeting point between wilderness and settlement: visitors can find everyday services, accommodation, and transport connections while remaining close to some of Finland’s largest areas of protected northern landscape.

Helsinki
Helsinki
Nature is never far in Helsinki. Locals swim in the sea, walk forested trails, and gather mushrooms or berries all within city limits. One popular local habit is heading to the sauna, and the city offers several open-to-the-public options. Löyly, located on the waterfront, combines traditional wood-burning saunas with a sleek, modern design. In winter, visitors can even pair a sauna session with a quick dip through a hole cut in the ice for an experience both shocking and strangely calming.

Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi, located just a few kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, is widely recognized as the official hometown of Santa Claus. From late August through early April, the Northern Lights are visible on clear nights, and several local guides offer nighttime tours to remote locations for optimal viewing. During summer, the sun doesn't set for weeks, giving travelers the rare chance to hike or kayak under a sky that stays bright at midnight.
